Why Shower Waterproofing Is So Important
Tile and grout are not the waterproofing system. Learn what protects the structure beneath a custom-tiled shower and why it matters.

If tile is not damaged by water, why do we need a waterproofing system installed under the tile in a shower?
Custom-tiled showers are a sizable investment. When failed showers are opened, the damage can include persistent moisture, fungal growth, deteriorated substrates, and framing decay after long-term water exposure.
A Shower Is a Water-Management System
From a construction perspective, a shower must capture water and direct it into the plumbing system while protecting the surrounding structure. If that principle is misunderstood, an incomplete water-management system can be hidden beneath otherwise beautiful tile.
Waterproofing First, Finish Second
Homeowners are often surprised to learn that the visible tile is only one part of the assembly. The Tile Council of North America states plainly that grout joints are not waterproof; in a shower, protection must come from the selected installation method and substrate. The decorative finish and hidden system must be selected and detailed to work together.
Recognized approaches include a traditional water-in/water-out receptor with a continuously sloped mortar bed over a shower-pan membrane, represented by TCNA method B415, and bonded-waterproof-membrane showers over continuously sloped mortar-bed floors and solid backing walls, represented by B421. TCNA identifies B421C for a barrier-free bonded-membrane assembly. Whichever method is selected, the drain, seams, corners, fasteners, penetrations, materials, and cure times must stay within that complete method and its current manufacturer instructions.
Kentucky Requirements and Testing
Kentucky's current plumbing regulation, 815 KAR 20:070, requires a shower drain pan to rise at least 6 inches on all vertical walls and to use listed lead, CPE, PVC, or another approved material; it provides an exception for a concrete floor below outside grade. The authority having jurisdiction determines the applicable permit, inspection, and test procedure.
As a model-code benchmark, the 2024 International Plumbing Code calls for a conventional liner to slope 1/4 inch per foot toward the drain and for the completed liner to be water-tested to a depth of at least 2 inches at the threshold. Those IPC provisions should not be presented as Kentucky law unless the authority having jurisdiction has adopted them. In every case, complete required testing and inspection before tile conceals the receptor.
A professional builder who understands the complete shower system can coordinate the substrate, membrane, drain, transitions, tile, and sealants—and can verify the work before it disappears behind the finished surface. That hidden work is what gives a beautiful shower its best chance at a long service life.
